District Hiking Competitions 2011

The 2-day 'Senior' event  took place over the weekend of 1/2 October. The 4 teams taking part had to plot their routes to visit a number of checkpoints along a 9 mile course keeping to a time schedule that they calculated.

The teams had an early start on Saturday morning from Sizergh Castle, near Kendal (SD 497 877).

Having completed an essential equipment check, our team set off, in beautiful warm autumn weather, for the overnight camp site at SilverHelme walking via Levens and Heversham to Milnthorpe.

After lunching at Milnthorpe, their route then took them through Dallam Park to Beetham, Fairy Steps, Hazelslack, and Hawes Water and on to their campsite.

After cooking their evening meals the teams enjoyed a wide game before settling in for the night.

The Junior teams joined their older counterparts on Sunday morning when the weather turned very wet after the previous glorious day. Both age groups then completed a separate five mile course around the Silverdale/Yealand area visiting a number of bases where they were asked to answer a number of questions on navigational and mapping topics.

Our Senior team's navigation and timing was very good on the whole bringing them home in 1st place to win the Dean Morrell trophy.

Our Junior team completed a memorable double successfully navigating the course and answering correctly most of their questions.

The conclusion of another successful weekend.
