District Hiking Competitions 2009

The 2-day 'Senior' event  took place over the weekend of 2/3 May. The 8 teams taking part had to plot their routes to visit a number of checkpoints along a 10 mile course keeping to a time schedule set on their route plan.

The teams had an early start on Saturday morning from the Brock Valley Picnic site (SD 548 430).

Ready for the off, Brock ValleyHaving completed an essential equipment check, our team set off, in beautiful springtime weather, for the overnight camp site at Guys Farm, Forton walking via Butt Hill, Cobble Hey and Landskill to the first base at Calder Vale. From there they had a stiff climb to Kelbrick and over Barnacre Moor to the second base at Grizedale Bridge.

After lunching close by, their route then took them into Grize Dale and over Nicky Nook and down into Scorton village. Here there was time for a welcome drink and an ice cream in the village post office before setting off for the next base at Cleveley Bridge and the final run into Guys Farm (SD 509 516).

After cooking their evening meals the teams had an opportunity to test their toxophily skills, take part in wide games and a quiz before settling in for the night (heavy showers!).

The Junior teams joined their older counterparts on Sunday morning and both age groups then completed a separate six mile course around the Scorton area visiting a number of bases where they were asked to answer a number of questions on navigational and mapping topics.

Winners, Senior eventOur Senior team's navigation and timing was impeccable bringing them home in 1st place to win the Dean Morrell trophy.

Junior WinnersOur Junior team completed a memorable double successfully navigating the course and answering correctly all but one of their questions.

All winners! The conclusion of another successful weekend.
