BOWLANDER HIKING COMPETITION

28/29 March 2009

Well done to our team on gaining 3rd place in this prestigious event. Around 30 teams from all around West Lancs competed to take home the magnificent trophy won by us in the last 2 years.

Teams are required to plan a route, visiting a number of checkpoints, and have to arrive at each within a limited time window based on their estimated timings within their Route Plan.

Over 30 teams, from all around West Lancashire, the majority from the Scout Section and some from ESU's, reported to the start point at Scorton Picnic site  on Saturday 28 March to commence their journeys. The weather was cool and dry. After having an equipment check, the Scout Section teams set off to navigate two routes of 12 miles, our team going via Cliftons Farm, Harrisend Fell, Grize Dale, Burns Farm, Kelbrick and on through Calder Vale, Landskill, Butt Hill, Tootle Hall and down to Waddecar campsite where they camped for the night.

The teams awoke early on Sunday morning to a hard frost - there was some difficulty using the new gas Trangia stove as the gas cylinder was frozen solid!  A further route of 6 miles was followed on Sunday taking the Scouts via Beacon Fell, Broadhead, Lower Core, Blindhurst and Bleasdale and back to Waddecar.

When all the marks were added up our team came a creditable 3rd.

Congratulations to the team on an excellent performance and for keeping Lonsdale's flag flying. Thanks to the organising committee for another well-run and enjoyable event.
